Get a teaching job in China

IV.  Get some scans - Schools will ask for a scan of your college degree, any relevant certificates, and, if you're married, a scan of your marriage certificate.  You might also need to send a scan of your passport.  Some schools don't ask for this information to be send via email, but instead ask for it to be faxed.  NEVER send originals.  It's also a good idea to have this information scanned and copied to a disk or CD so that you always have it if something gets lost.

V.  Check out job ads - There are many sites which feature jobs teaching in China.  Here are some to get you started (besides Teach Abroad and the aforementioned China TEFL):

Dave's ESL Cafe (www.eslcafe.com) - Great source of job ads, arranged by date - the newest will be at the top of the page.

TEFL (www.tefl.com) - Slick, well-organized site which includes EFL jobs from all over the world.  At TEFL.com, you can create an online resume and cover letters, upload media (photos, video, and audio), and easily keep track of your applications.  With TEFL's Inst Apply, you can easily send your CV, cover letter, and photo to prospective employers.  Jobs are also organized by country and by date, so you can make sure you apply to only the freshest jobs.

Abroad China (www.abroadchina.org) - Many jobs, good FAQ page, and maps of China.

ESL Monkeys (www.eslmonkeys.com) - You can post your resume free for 90 days, search the job board, and ask questions on the teacher forums.

CN Wave (www.cnwave.com) - Many jobs to choose from, which can be sorted by date.

VI.  Answer ads -  OK, you see a job which interests you.  Before you answer, read the details carefully.  Pay attention to what the school asks for.  If it specifically asks only for people from certain countries and you are not from one of them, keep moving.  If it asks for females and you are male, don't waste your time.  However, there is one exception to this - TEFL certificates.  Most schools ask for a TEFL certificate.  This is to attract people who already have teaching and/or EFL experience.  If you have these, even if you do not possess a TEFL certificate, go ahead and apply.
