Traveling English Teacher
So, you want to wander the earth as a traveling English teacher. Many people do it, and many people have great stories to tell. As they say, the world is your oyster. The question is, Where is the best place to live?
Well, I probably don’t need to tell you that the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand are out of the question. You’ll have to find another way to get to those places. But the rest of the world offers plenty of English teaching options…
Asia - Asia is still the most popular destination. Why? Because the demand for English is high, and there are few English speakers. In countries like Japan, Korea and Taiwan you can really make money. You can make money anywhere in Asia if you play your cards right. In countries like Thailand, Vietnam and China, you might not be able to bring back a lot of dough, but you can live cheaply while you’re there.
Because Asian countries are so different from the west, many find these countries to be great places to live and teach. You’ll never forget your experience teaching in Asia.
Europe - The most coveted English teaching jobs are in Europe. Good luck getting a job there. It can be done, but you have to have some solid credentials and teaching experience. Everybody dreams about sitting at a street-side cafe in Paris, or laying about on the beach in Spain.
On the other hand, eastern European countries like the Czech Republic and Poland have growing economies and a high demand for English teachers.
Last time we talked about Asia and Europe, the 2 parts of the world everybody thinks about when they think of teaching English. But, what about the rest of the world? There is still lots to explore!
Latin America - Lots of people to go Mexico, Costa Rico or Peru to teach English. The main draw here is the laid back lifestyle. The money may not be so great, but who needs money when you live on the beach anyway?
Africa - There are many volunteer opportunities to teach in Africa, but not much money. Money isn’t the reason people choose Africa. All over Africa, you can experience a rich culture, and you can really make a difference in people’s lives. Unlike students in certain Asian or European countries, African students are eager to learn English. It assures them more opportunities in life.
Middle East - You can make tons of money teaching English in the Middle East. Because it’s dangerous and most countries have strict laws that aren’t much fun to live under, the Middle East is not a top destination. Still, lots of English teachers head to a country like Egypt, Yemen or Saudi Arabia for a year or so to get experience. The money can be quite good.
Wherever you want to go, there are opportunities to teach English. It’s just a matter of picking a spot!
